Deerhoof and Xiu Xiu to cover Joy Division.

Let’s get down to brass tacks, I love Deerhoof. I love Deerhoof only ever-so-slightly more than Joy Division. I fully understand the gravity that Joy Division’s 1979 album Unknown Pleasures bears, so imagine my surprise when I heard that the San Franciscans were to team up with weird new pop warblers Xiu Xiu to cover the album live in its entirety. I was a little more than agog.

Xiu Xiu have the dark stones to pull it off, and probably do a bloody good job. Deerhoof though? There’s snippets of darkness in there, but I can’t envisage it. I probably wont envisage it, being that said event is due to take place April 29 in Krems, Austria at Donaufestival. Saying that, with a lin-up that boasts Panda Bear, Dan Deacon, Rufus Wainwright, Fuck Buttons, Wolf Parade, Peaches, and Alec Empire and the Ex, who knows. European festivals are the way forwad.
